The aromatic sap attracted a wide variety of flying insects which became stuck and ultimately covered in the sap. This specimen is from the Russian town of Kaliningrad on the Baltic Sea which makes this creature around 40-45 million years old. The fly is clearly visible to the naked eye and its preserved detail (hairs, wing structure etc.) is spectacular when viewed with some form of modest magnification (my photo of the creature's compound eye does not really do it justice). To anticipate one question; we have dealt in amber as part of our business for many years and will unreservedly guarantee the authenticity of this fine piece.
