This anchor is from an era when seafood was abundant and wildlife populations were at thier greatest numbers in the Bay. Many areas were still pristine and the beauty had not yet been altered by our habitation. When this anchor was recovered from the sandy bottom of Tangier Sound just off the Deal Island shoreline the water clarity rivalled that in the Keys of Florida. Enough reminiscing and wishing for things that will never return. The anchor was recovered from the skipjack Esther W. which after her demise was scuttled for use as a breakwater to try and slow erosion in front of my great grandmothers house. During the last quarter of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century the Chesapeake bay and the skipjack were synonymous with one another. Here is an opportunity to own and display an original piece of Chesapeake bay history. The lore of the skipjack will always be a great part of the Eastern Shore`s legacy. This item is rather weighty so it will be pick up only or arrangements can be made for delivery within 100 miles of Salisbury, MD. The anchors measurements are 68" down the length of the shank from the top of the ring to the crown. The stock is 60" long and the arms measure 41" from the point of one fluke to the other. The anchor is in as found condition with a slight bend to the shank where it had be under a lot of strain at some point in its storied life. The Esther W. can be seen at www.google.com and type in the name there is a 1930`s photo of it entering Annapolis harbor. | | |
