This, we believe, is a lithograph by Leon Girardet, after a painting by Leon Girardet (painting title unknown). It could be a lithograph done by someone else, after Leon Girardet. Girardet's signature appears in the print, as if part of the original painting. It appears to be typical of many prints, both etchings and lithographs, of romantic subjects produced in the latter part of the 19th century.
The black and white lithograph has been overpainted by hand, with what appears to be gouache, to give it its coloration. The highlights (white) bear visible brush strokes. The subject appears to be a courtyard scene, where a man in a tri-cornered hat arrives by horseback and is greeted by a number of ladies.
The date of the work is probably the 1890's. The print itself measures approximately 8 1/2" x 10 1/2", and is set and matted in a 16 1/4" x 19 1/2" frame. The matting is grey, and somewhat yellowed, and bears some gilt line work on its surface. The frame is gilt plaster over wood. The frame and matting are original, and were done at the shop of R. T. Knoor in Youngstown Ohio (sticker on back of framing). The print was owned by a Connecticut family, one branch of which lived in Youngstown during the 1890's and early 1900's, and it is likely that the print belonged to someone in that branch of the family.
The print itself appears to be in excellent condition, and has always been behind glass, in this frame. The frame has some chipping and cracking, but could probably be restored adequately. The matting should be examined, possibly replaced, but appears worn, rather than damaged.
