Neolithic culture appeared in the Jericho, modern-day West Bank, about 8,500 BC. By 8,500–8,000 BC farming communities arose in Jericho and spread to Asia Minor, North Africa and North Mesopotamia. Neolithic peoples were skilled farmers, manufacturing a range of tools necessary for the tending, harvesting and processing of crops (such as sickle blades and grinding stones) and food production. They were also skilled manufacturers of a range of other types of stone tools and ornaments, including arrowheads, projectile points, beads, and statuettes.

The Sub-Sahara desert region in Africa has produced a multitude of different types of stone arrowheads. They are being recovered on sites in Mali, Niger, and Chad. The blades and projectile points of sub-Saharan Africa represent some of the most delicately flaked and beautifully executed smaller stone tools of primitive man. The majority of them were probably made sometime between 5,000 B.C. to 3,000 B.C. By this time, some points were so perfectly executed that they were not used at all but served as items of prestige by their owner and are sometimes found in association with burials. These finest points and blades from this period rival any stone implement ever made by primitive man and were sometimes manufactured out of the most stunning gem-grade material such as fine translucent chalcedony and agate as well as transparent crystalline quartz. For example, fan-eared points seem suspiciously elaborate for normal use. But that doesn't mean they weren't used for that purpose. There were other cultures in the world that also made "fancy" projectile points for hunting.

Ancient cultures always leave something behind for later people to ponder. The Sub-Saharan arrowheads exhibit the skill and pride of craftsmen long gone. The stone survives to record their passing.
