1755 Cole Road Map PADDINGTON ISLINGTON London England
Handsome fold-out copperplate engraved map with compass rose and decorative title cartouche, printed more than 253 years ago.
This map depicts a planned road through the part of London today known as Kings Cross. This road connected the Edgware Road at Paddington with Islington, east of the Battle Bridge.
The map was engraved by Benjamin Cole and published as a supplement to Gentleman's Magazine in 1755. The image area measures 15.6 x 46.7 cm [6" x 18-1/2"], and there is a letter-key legend identifying properties along the proposed right-of-way.
Among the specific named places and features on the map are Tyburn Road, Oxford Street, Red Lion Square, Tottenham Court, Farthing Pye House, Foundling Hospital, Marylebone, Jenning's Folly, Jew's Harp House, New Burying Ground, and more. The scans below give a closer look:
The map is titled A Plan of the Intended New Road from Padington to Islington. [Note that Paddington is spelled with one "d."]
